Caryn Gibson Appointed to Fill Montrose County District 2 Commissioner Vacancy
MONTROSE, COLO. - Caryn Gibson was appointed to serve as Montrose County Commissioner for District 2 during the September 3rd meeting of the Montrose County Republican Vacancy Committee.
The District 2 seat became vacant following the departure of Commissioner Sue Hansen, whose final day in office was August 31 after eight years of service to Montrose County. The vacancy committee appointed Gibson to fill the District 2 seat through the end of 2026. Gibson is also running unopposed for the District 2 seat on the November ballot.
Following her appointment at the September 3 meeting, Montrose County Clerk and Recorder Tressa Guynes administered the oath of office to Gibson, officially beginning her service as District 2 Commissioner.
A formal ceremonial swearing-in will also take place during the Montrose County Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, September 16th at 9:00am. Gibson’s family, friends and members of the community are invited to attend and help welcome her to the Board of County Commissioners.
Gibson is a lifelong Montrose County resident, fifth-generation member of a local farming family and longtime public servant. Her family homesteaded in the Pea Green area west of Olathe, and she grew up working on her family’s dairy farm. Today, Gibson and her husband, John, own and operate Rocking W Cheese and Webb Dairy outside of Olathe.
A 1982 graduate of Olathe High School, Gibson brings more than 40 years of experience in public education and organizational leadership. She holds degrees in Business Administration and Education from Western State College, now Western Colorado University, as well as a master’s degree in Vocational Education from Colorado State University. Gibson most recently served for 15 years as Superintendent of Delta County School District, overseeing an approximately $95 million annual budget, 4,500 students, nearly 750 employees and 14 school campuses. She retired June 30, 2026. Her extensive experience in budgeting, strategic planning, personnel management and policy development, combined with her agricultural background, provides a strong foundation for service on the Board of County Commissioners.

Gibson plans to focus on responsible and transparent budgeting, local control, and thoughtful growth and land-use planning. She will also advocate for agriculture and water while working to preserve Montrose County’s rural character and resources.
Gibson and her husband of nearly 29 years, John, have three daughters and five grandchildren. She said preserving Montrose County’s culture, heritage and opportunities for future generations will remain central to her approach to public service.
