SOUTH SALEM, NY, UNITED STATES, October 22, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Wolf Conservation Center announces the launch of a year-long inquiry-based experiential learning program with Danbury High School (Danbury, CT). The program, known as Discovery Den, invites students in AP Biology courses to explore topics of their own interest in the field of wildlife and conservation biology.

“This innovative program will bring conservation research projects and relevant techniques into the hands of students. We are proud of our partnership with the Danbury schools and hope that it will be a model for other science departments in Westchester and Fairfield counties,” said Leila Howland Wetmore, CEO of the Wolf Conservation Center.

Throughout the course, students will design a project, conduct research, and present to an audience of peers and professionals, thus preparing them for a variety of careers in the wildlife field and identifying opportunities for higher education.

“Seeing our students actively engage with professional researchers in the field is incredible. This partnership gives students a real sense of ownership over their learning,” said Aimee Reutzel, Danbury High School AP Biology teacher. “They aren’t just memorizing biological concepts—they are conducting real science, analyzing true data sets, and developing skills that will directly serve them in higher education and STEM careers.”

“Working alongside working scientists demystifies the scientific process for our young researchers. It transforms science from an academic subject into a tangible, impact-driven discipline. We are thrilled to see our students build genuine confidence in their abilities as emerging scientists,” said Barbara Bogart, Danbury High School AP Biology teacher.

The Center has long recognized the importance of involving younger generations in the effort to secure the permanent place of wolves on wild landscapes and hopes that these formative lessons can influence the futures of both the students and wolves.

“We are excited to launch the new Discovery Den program; it’s a testament to the hard work of the Center’s Education Department Staff and the staff of Danbury High School. Through this program, we strive to empower students to reach further, develop new skills, and to have a deeper understanding of career opportunities in the wildlife and conservation biology field,” said Andrew Connolly, Educator and Outreach Coordinator at the Wolf Conservation Center.
